But like the tortoise, never quite knowing which path it will take.<br />
<br />
I was doing makeready on a small business card. Using a very thin tissue to build up a weak part of the form. I saw how unique the printing appeared on that first piece of tissue, and I turned and started crawling down a new path.<br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Printing my<i> turtle</i> logo<i>.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I've had this turtle art for many years and finally had the time to use it. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I set up two presses so that I could print the background color in register with the line art.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">My projects usually take a path of their own and this one was no different. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When I started out I was only going to print a couple hundred cards with a yellow background. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">After 100 cards I thought maybe a little dab of blue ink on the disk would give it a transition of color, like an actual turtle shell.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I ended up keeping the job on the press for over three days experimenting with different colors and ended up with over 1,200 cards (shells). I can't wait to see what path they take.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="color: #990000; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: x-small;">I made two videos showing the two press set-up.</span><br />

With the inside pages ready I could determine the size of the covers & how I was going to decorate them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was running out of time to finish the project so I went with simplicity. I stamped Ivy's name on the spine using 12 point Piranesi Italic and two little ornaments and matched it with 18 point on the cover.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I stamped the spine copy first so when I wrapped the covers the copy would be centered.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: x-small;"><b>Making the front covers</b></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Long story short, I then glued the inside pages into the cover 'case'. Colored the tassels, attached the ornament hook, made a die cut card case to hold the little bugger and just like that they were done.<br />

Notes about the
Showcard--Vandercook Proof Press.</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
This
“Mini-Vandercook” Showcard press is actually a standard proof press in every
way. In fact we discovered that it was a Vandercook because it is identical in
design to the Vandercook Model 99 proof press – same design, same bearings,
ect. – Just quite a bit smaller. Fritz Klinke – current owner of the
Vandercook/Vandersons name and records confirms a list of serial numbers
assigned by Vandercook to these “Showcard” presses.</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
This press can be
used to print from any sort of standard type, linotype, Ludlow, engravings,
photopolymer plates – any standard type high .918 type or relief plate.</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
One additional
feature of the Showcard, not found on the Model 99 and 01 “big brothers” is the
gripped at one end which holds the sheet – or card in place – allowing for a
form or register which makes this little press practical for short runs of
‘loose-register’ multi color work</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
The special Showcard
type, is in fact, regular foundry type with a slot cut into the bottom.</div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
The slot allows the
type to fit over the square rods that form a removable, adjustable grid in the
bed of the press. The Showcard Company expected that this press would be used
to print small point-of-sale signs in department and grocery stores. To make
their equipment appealing to non-printers they developed an easy system of
composition wherein the ‘printer’ would simply lay the type on top of the
adjustable grid system which held it in place. It’s rather clever, actually,
but only needed if one has no idea how to set type or lock up a form.</div>

In March 2014 I had a voicemail left on my phone from a
person who said she was with a production company in Calgary Canada, getting
ready to film a show called<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_on_Wheels_(TV_series)"><i> Hell onWheels</i></a> and wanted me to call her back.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At first I thought it was a show about fast cars and assumed
it was something like the Fast and Furious movie and dismissed it as a low
priority and did not return the call until 7 days later.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When I finally called her back she informed me that <i><a href="http://hellonwheels.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Characters">Hell on Wheels</a></i> was a television series about
the roving tent city that accompanies the transcontinental railroad’s western
expansion. The show was returning for its fourth season and that the script
called for a fully stocked 1870’s letterpress/newspaper/job shop called the Cheyenne
Leader, which actually printed its volume 1, #1 newspaper on September 19,
1867.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The <i>Hell on Wheels</i>
crew brought me to Calgary for 4 days on the set. They had all the equipment in
its Cheyenne Leader building.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My previous post details the equipment package that I put
together and shipped to Calgary. In addition to my equipment the set director
also bought a C&P, 8”x12” from New York and a Washington hand press (approximately
14”x34”) from Briar Press. The C&P was very rusty, almost frozen and had
fallen over in shipping and the main shaft with the drive wheel had broken
along with the feed table support arms.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My job was the get all the equipment cleaned, set up and
printing correctly and arranged to approximate a working 1870’s newspaper shop.
They gave me a crew of 2 or 3 guys who would clean move or build anything I
needed to assist in the shop assembly. </div>

printed a <b><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">No Credit</span></b> sign for the Casino/Saloon and a <b>Wanted for Murder poster</b>. Finally I cut a stack of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYJYVCUT8Bw">'Paladin's'</a> business cards on the Paragon Paper cutter to

explained how letterpress worked, what each piece of equipment was, answered questions.
Then I worked with 4 extras. Each one took a turn on the presses so that they
could get comfortable running them and look like they knew what they were doing.

They also have a Chandler & Price 8' x 12" Treadle driven press that is in rough shape and some type of proof press that I have not seen yet.<br />
<br />
The crew at HoW is flying me up to Calgary on Monday 21st 2014 to act as a consultant. I will be putting the finishing touches on the equipment, to get it into running/printing shape. I will be working with the props people and possibly the actors to teach them how everything works and how to use the presses and type so they can pass as letterpress printers circa 1885.<br />

It was acquired in Duluth Minnesota </div>

It was owned by the Scott Free Press. </div>

I believe they had owned it since the 1950's<br />

disassemling the press, soda blasting all parts<br />
to clean a century of old dried ink and bad paint jobs.<br />
Repainted her, highlighting the oil ports and detailed all the frame cast type in gold.</div>

The original <a href="http://www.briarpress.org/11249">Plumbline Press</a> was a private press

and sold in the last year. The Advance on the bottom left went out to Boise Idaho.</div>
<div>
The Reliance pictured center right went to<a href="http://www.smokeyroadpress.com/pages/about-us"> Margo Ecke</a> in Louisville Georgia.</div>
<div>
And the left-handed Paragon in the center left is going to <a href="http://maryhark.com/">Mary Hark</a> in Madison Wisconsin.</div>
<div>
The bottom left went to <a href="http://www.moglea.com/">Meg Gleason</a> in Audubon Iowa.</div>
<div>
The Advance in the top right will soon be in Delaplane Virginia</div>

<span style="color: blue;">Hi Jon!<br />Thanks so so much for the message. (and the cutter of course!)<br /><br />We got it home safely (no problems) and installed it in my press room on Sunday evening. It was much easier to move into the basement than the press. (I know what you are thinking....putting a C&P in a basement is nuts!) It cuts wonderfully! Thanks for taking good care of it. It is going to be a wonderful addition to Mōglea. Once I get some good photos of the shop, i'll send them to you. :)<br /><br />It was quite a joy to meet you too. I loved talking with you about letterpress stuff. It's always fun to talk with someone who is passionate about letterpress + type. We couldn't have been happier with this transaction. Thanks for being so helpful! I will definitely let you know if I have questions!! Good luck with all your future letterpress endeavors! It sounds like you have some fun projects ahead of you!<br />Best, Meg</span></div>

In early 2010 I responded to a Craig's list ad. I placed the ad that follows on <a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.briarpress.org">Briar Press.</a><br />
<a href="http://www.briarpress.org/"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671708627090794386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiGJ8cowNu83WWx_xT5TFbKi2QqlUnlBVn2YkMYTHJyoNUiztRx-ln5JlDuFtsp6kXA3-Bx-dM_v5MTrjJeSdJ2M_5ay8WacjRGINM-2FX2SiOHtDLxbr2Ain-c248lIvL_O0oBJTmG0A/s200/C%2526P.1.1.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: left; height: 280px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 329px;" /></a> <span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">I recently responded to an ad for a Chandler & Price letterpress. I drove to the small town in rural Minnesota to look at the press. I was hoping that it would be a smaller treadle press.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;">The press was a 10 x 15. It had not been run for 30 years but has been kept in a dry barn the whole time. The press was a little stiff, as you might imagine. I turned the flywheel over about 10 times and knew that with a little lubrication it would freewheel easily. The press is in super shape. no welds, three sets of roller cores but the best part was this....The lady who came out of the farm house to tell me the history of the press. Heddy - all of 87 years old 5' 2" and a Norwegian firecracker of a lady. She told me how she used to make the press sing. How many impressions per hour she could run. How her boss kept it a secret from the customers that she was the one running the press. She brought out samples of her work. She showed me the wedding text type that she printed her wedding announcements with. You could tell that she loved the press and the work. This was when printing was a production job, not an art form. Her samples reflected that...Just a light Norwegian kiss, easy on the lead. I do not want the press but I do want all the other things in the barn. The grandson and Heddy want the history/legacy with this press preserved. From the beginning I thought her story should be preserved along with the press and my thought was to find someone who would help to carry this forward...If this is of interest to you, contact Jon @ turtlemanfred@gmail.com. Thank you in advance thinking this over.<br />Jon D. Minnetonka MN.<br />PS...we back-traced the serial # to 1895</span><br />
<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">The person to respond to my ad was Daniel Goscha.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">Here is one of his initial emails to me,</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br />
Hi Jon -<br />
If it helps to sweeten the deal, you can let them know how I am going to use the press....<br />
I teach graphic design here at a small college in northern Wisconsin. Before that I was a professor at the University of Illinois where I taught graphic design and a letterpress class. When I left Illinois, I had to leave all of that equipment behind - it was heartbreaking for me. So, one of my goals in setting up the press here - which I am calling <a href="http://www.facebook.com/RedKitePress">Red Kite Press</a> - is to be a fine art and book arts teaching studio. It will be a place I can bring students from the college and a place where I can hold regular workshops to teach a whole new generation of designers and artists the importance and beauty of fine letterpress. This press is going to be lovingly restored and will be the main press of our little shop. I plan on naming this press "Heddy" to help preserve its history. I am hoping I will be able to get a picture of Heddy with the press while we are out there that we will be able to hang in the shop here. Its rich history and story will absolutely travel with it. Those who use a press know that we impress a bit of ourselves into a press we spend time with and Heddy's spirit will absolutely come with the press and be given a loving home here.<br />
Thanks for all of your help Jon!<br />
